The club started as Picton Badminton Club in August 1980, based at Picton Sports Centre, and started due to the inspiration of Peter Hodgson who became the first chairman, ably assisted by Barbara Graff as Secretary. The club entered one team into the Liverpool League and were runnersup in their first season. At this time there were so many clubs in the league there were three premier divisions and then parallel divisions called Hunt and Walker from Divisions 48! This was replaced with straight divisions from 198990 season. The club started a junior club in 1981 and the 1st team were promoted to a higher division for our first three consecutive years. The 1st team won the Sangster Cup in the 1985/6 season and were again promoted in the league. Negotiations to move to Garston Sports Centre took place as the centre was being built, but first we moved temporarily to Toxteth Sports Centre from September 1985 to April 1986, finally moving to Garston Sports Centre when it opened on May 4th 1986. Peter Hodgson resigned as Chairperson in 1990 and was succeeded by Edna Pye, who was succeeded in 1994 by Kevin Connors. |
The first team won their division in the 199192 season, a team was entered in the Widnes League in the 1992/93 season and 1993/94 season then a third team was introduced into the Liverpool League in 1994/95. A selection committee was introduced in 1994/95 at the request of the team captains. In 1997/98 the 2nd and 3rd team were together in Division 3, in 1998/99 and 1999/2000 the 1st and 2nd teams were together in Division 2 then in 2000/01 the first team reached Division 1. The club had to move venue due to Garston Sports Centres building work. At first this was a temporary move to Peter Lloyd Sports Centre from 22nd August 1999 to 3rd October 1999 but a second move to Greenbank Sports Academy in August 2000 became permanent when the council decided to close Garston on Sunday evenings. Club members voted to adopt the name South Liverpool Badminton Club at the AGM on July 1st 2001. This became the third name weve had since the club began and our current venue, Greenbank Sports Academy, is the fifth venue that the club has made its home. Edna Pye August 2001 |
